Back to Back: Kraftwerk’s The Man-Machine with The Model (Big Black)

You could pick up a remastered copy of Kraftwerk’s The Man-Machine (along with seven other albums) come October 5. In the mean time, enjoy The Model from the regular old copy, along with Big Black’s noisy version of The Model.

Kraftwerk – The Model (1978)

Big Black – The Model (1987)

Lyrics:

She’s a model and she’s looking good
I’d like to take her home that’s understood
She plays hard to get, she smiles from time to time
It only takes a camera to change her mind

She’s going out tonight whilst drinking just champagne
And she has been checking nearly all the men
She’s playing her game and you can hear them say
She’s looking good for beauty we will pay

She’s posing for consumer products now and then
For every camera she gives the best she can
I saw her on the cover of a magazine
Now she’s a big success I want to meet her again

Spectrum – Walking & Falling (2009)

Laurie Anderson – Walking & Falling (1982)

Lyrics:

I wanted you. And I was looking for you. But I couldn’t find you. I wanted you. And I was looking for you all day. But I couldn’t find you. I couldn’t find you. You’re walking. And you don’t always realize it, but you’re always falling. With each step you fall forward slightly. And then catch yourself from falling. Over and over, you’re falling. And then catching yourself from falling. And this is how you can be walking and falling at the same time.

Sonic Youth 2009 Fall Tour

On August 3rd, 2009 Sonic Youth played a last-minute set in San Francisco at the fabulous Independent (in my opinion, one of SF’s best venues for sound and vision). The show was announced on July 28th and sold out the same day. I was late on buying tickets, but with a little bit of persistence/waiting around the box office, they sold me and two other people ticket’s the day of the sold-out show. Sonic Youth will be embarking upon another tour beginning later this month in Pomona, view the dates below.

Culprit Sessions @ Standard Rooftop

Earlier this month I went to a party at the Standard Rooftop in Downtown L.A. for Shaun Reeves, Droog (who have recently launched their own record label, Culprit), Matías Aguayo (of Cómeme & Kompakt) and John Wander (of Roam Music). Music was great, met some new people as well. One of them is Yelva, and she does a fashion blog called Fashion Puttana. Another guy was James, or how I like to call him: T-bird James, and besides working at the Standard he is in the band Meho Plaza. Snapped some photos of these people with their tattoos or accessories.

Bernadette Cuvalo Doing Jet

Jet! I can almost remember their funny faces
That time you told me that
You were going to be marrying soon.
And jet, I thought the only
Lonely place was on the moon.
Jet! jet!
Jet! was your father as bold as a sergeant major?
How come he told you that
You were hardly old enough yet?
And jet, I thought the major
Was a lady suffragette.
Jet! jet!

Ah, matter, want jet to always love me?
Ah, matter, want jet to always love me?
Ah, matter, much later.

Jet! with the wind in your hair of a thousand laces.
Climb on the back and well
Go for a ride in the sky.
And jet, I thought the major
Was a lady suffragette.
Jet! jet!

Bach and Dvořák @ Dvořák Hall

I heard some Bach and Dvořák performed at the Rudolfinum’s Dvořák Hall. It was delightful. The hall was quite exquisite as well. This is my first classical music sort of concert. Funny how lots of people totally dress up really fancy like — I was wearing jeans and a hoodie. My roommate treated me as a thanks for computer help throughout the week. I have to admit that near the end of the performance I was kind of falling asleep … what can you do! But there were some moments that had my full attention as well. Long day… Oh yeah, they do encores at these types of concerts as well, in case you were wonderin’.

J. S. BACH: Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B flat major BWV 1051
J. S. BACH: Concerto in D major for three violins and orchestra BWV 1064
A. DVOŘÁK: Silent Woods for cello and orchestra op. 68
A. DVOŘÁK: String Quintet in G major op. 77 (arrangement)

violin Jana Vlachová, Dana Vlachová, Maria Ericsson Vlach

Merzbow in Prague

I saw Merzbow last night – a totally bone rattling experience. I recorded a video and I was just looking at it now and there’s no point in sharing it with anyone since it sounds like shit! But i have some pictures… basically yeah he is up there with two laptops and occasionally he plays this thing that looks like a guitar without the arm. Lots of noise (duh), really loud, and this thumping sound in the background most of the night. He played for about an hour, the end was the best, with the strobey lights shining on him… my camera had run out of batteries at that point, because i recorded a bunch of worthless video… I shoulda known better. My ears were ringing afterwards. The venue was nice — the Archa Theatre.
